Last night I skipped the bars and opted to see some of the the mid-autumn festivities in central HK. The streets were packed with families, parades passed through the streets and Chinese lanterns draped the roof tops.
The Mid-Autumn Festival aka Moon Festival, Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival is a popular harvest holiday that dates back over 3,000 years and celebrates the moon. This event parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. Family members and friends gather to admire the bright harvest moon, eat moon cakes, pomelos, carry lanterns, kites, plant ‘mid autumn’ trees and watch fire dragon dances.
